The Calgary Flames took advantage of an extended break to work on their scuffling power play. Theyll see if the extra practice pays off Thursday night in a matchup with the Arizona Coyotes, one of the leagues worst teams at killing penalties. The Flames (22-18-3) have been off since opening a five-game road swing leading into the All-Star break with Saturdays 1-0 win over Vancouver that snapped a three-game skid. Mikael Backlund scored and Joni Ortio made 36 saves in his first start of the season after being recalled by Calgary two days earlier. With four days off, the Flames got a chance to return home and take a break from the grind of the schedule. Its a time to get some mental and physical rest, but at the same time, we cant be complacent, coach Bob Hartley told the teams official website. Hartley and his coaching staff spent extra time examining their brutal play with the extra skater. The Flames are 1 for 14 with the man advantage in 2015 and have converted a league-worst 8.9 percent of power plays (4 for 45) since Dec. 12. Over the past two or three weeks, weve hit a speed bump, Hartley said. It comes in waves and thats what were facing. Ive talked to many coaches over the past weeks like I always do, about my power play, thats where were searching for solutions. A simple solution may be facing the Coyotes (16-22-4). Arizona has killed a Western Conference-worst 74.5 percent of its penalties and has allowed eight power-play goals in 25 chances during a 2-4-0 stretch. The Flames have won all three matchups with the Coyotes this season, scoring twice with the extra skater. Rookie center Josh Jooris notched his first career hat trick in the last matchup with Arizona, a 5-2 win Dec. 2. Jiri Hudler assisted on two of those goals and has one goal and five assists in the season series. The Coyotes, whose 3.26 goals-against average is among the worst in the NHL, head into the finale of a six-game homestand after Tuesdays 3-2 loss to San Jose. The Sharks broke a 2-all tie in the third period on a shot that bounced off Arizona defenseman Zbynek Michaleks skate and squeezed through Devan Dubnyks pads. You hate to lose on a goal like that, especially because I thought we battled hard, Michalek told the Coyotes official website. You feel like whatever you do, nothing goes your way. We just have to fight through it. Weve said it many times. Nobody is going to give us anything for free. The Coyotes traded Dubnyk, who had been their most consistent goalie with a 9-5-2 record, 2.72 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, to Minnesota for a third-round draft pick in 2015 on Wednesday. That leaves Mike Smith, who has struggled with a 7-17-2 mark, 3.52 GAA and .885 save percentage, to carry the load. One positive for Arizona is Mikkel Boedker breaking out of his scoring slump. Boedker has four goals in the last three games after going without one in the previous 11 contests. The Coyotes leader with 13 goals, Boedker has one assist against Calgary this season. Calgary will start Ortio again after his stellar debut and Karri Ramo, working his way back from injury, will travel with the team. Josh Bailey Jersey . After losing Brett Cecil to groin tightness on Friday, the Blue Jays watched as R. Brock Nelson Jersey . Yup, he definitely needed this one. Craig homered twice and had three RBIs Wednesday night to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Craig went 4 for 5 and Yadier Molina added three hits for the Cardinals, who salvaged the final game of a three-game set in hopes of staying within shouting distance of front-running Milwaukee in the NL Central. http://www.nhlislandershockeystore.com/. Phoenix originally signed Barbosa to a 10-day contract on Jan. 8 after Eric Bledsoe injured his knee and then signed him to another 10-day deal. Jean-Francois Berube Jersey . Make the extra pass, take care of the ball, play defence and get more out of his bench. Casey Cizikas Jersey . When the next inning rolled around Wednesday, though, Nationals manager Matt Williams sent Strasburg to the mound to face the top of the Dodgers order in what would become a 3-2 victory for Washington, the first time this season the No. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- A three-goal first period started things off right for the St. Johns IceCaps Friday night as they downed the Binghamton Senators 6-2 in American Hockey League action. "I really liked our start," IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said. "I thought we came out and set the tone. We were able to get on the board first and then build off that. It was a strong game against an excellent team." John Albert and Kael Mouillierat each scored two goals to lead St. Johns. McCambridge was happy to get star performances from both forwards, and said he has been impressed with their play of late. "Mouillierat has been a really good offensive piece for us all season long," he said. "Hes a cornerstone on the power play and 5-on-5 hes a solid two-way player that can create offence. And, John Albert has really taken his game to the next level. The speed he comes through the neutral zone with is hard to contain." Mouillierat enjoyed scoring two in front of the home crowd and setting the tone early for the IceCaps. "Its awesome," Mouillierat said. "You always want to contribute. Ive been trying to focus on shooting the puck a little more, lucky enough, a few went in for me tonight." The forward wasnt surprised by the style of game, which featured a lot of quick breaks and a few breakaways. "Last time we played them it was a high-flying game too," he said. "t;They have a lot of firepower over there.dddddddddddd We tried to limit their chances and take advantage of ours. Adam Lowry and Eric ODell also scored for the IceCaps (33-19-4). Buddy Robinson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau replied for Binghamton (33-18-4). IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves, while his Binghamton counterpart, Nathan Lawson, stopped 28 shots. Lowry opened the scoring, putting the IceCaps ahead on a backhander five-hole in front of the net at the 5:09 mark of the first period. Albert added to the lead 12:21 into the first, cleaning up a Jason Jaffray rebound on the power play. Thirty seconds later, Mouillierat put the IceCaps up 3-0, finishing off a pass out front, beating Lawson high. Mouillierat added his second of the game with a high wrister 10:18 into the second, from the right faceoff dot on the power play. Albert added his second of the game, stripping a defender of the puck and scoring on a breakaway after a quick backhand-to-forehand move with 31 seconds left in the second period. ODell added insult to injury, scoring a penalty shot with a quick shot to fool Lawson 2:38 into the third. Robinson put the Senators on the scoreboard with a high blocker wristshot at the 7:53 mark of the third. Pageau added another for the Senators, finishing a cross-crease tap-in 10:14 into the third. St. Johns went 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Senators were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
